How to Decorate Your Home to Spark Joy and Love

Your home should be a sanctuary.  A place where you can go to rest, relax, and recharge, and perhaps to escape some of the madness of today’s world. And it should be a place full of love and good memories. After all, it’s where we spend most of our lives!

However, sometimes we lose sight of this. Either we get too busy doing other things, or we overplay the whole “our house is an investment” idea, and, in the process, we deprive ourselves from creating the safe haven we truly deserve.

Fortunately, however, it is possible to make a few small decor changes that will transform your home from “just a house” to a true home that you can return to every day and enjoy to the maximum.

Here are several tips for how to decorate your home to spark joy and love.

Clean Up and Organize

One of the biggest reasons why our homes sometimes lose that charm and warmth of a home is because there is simply too much stuff. Cluttered spaces, for most people, induce stress and anxiety, and this is not something you want to be feeling while at home.

Plus, if you’re hanging onto a lot of things from your past, there’s a chance you’ve got some trigger material just hanging around. Maybe you bought that picture frame with an ex-lover who broke your heart? Or, perhaps you’re hanging onto something from Mom or Dad that doesn’t inspire nostalgia but rather just makes you sad.

In any case, all of this extra stuff has to go. Work room by room and go through the various things you’ve got stored in there. Then, ask yourself, why do I still have this? When did I last use it? What emotion comes up as a result of seeing and touching this thing?

Based on the responses you come up with, it’s time to either make space for and showcase that item, or just throw it away. Another option is to donate or give away a few of your things you’re not quite ready to call trash.

For some of you, this approach may sound familiar. It’s often called the KonMari, or Marie Kondo, method, and it’s all about making sure all the things you have in your home serve a purpose.

If you start thinking like this, then it will become a lot easier to declutter your home and reorganize it in a way that inspires more joy and love. You can find out more about the KonMari method at The Architecture Designs.

Change Up the Colors

One of the first things we see when we walk into a room is the color of the walls. And since all colors have different meanings and associations, the colors we choose for our home are going to have a major impact on our mood while in that space.

So, if you’re feeling like your home isn’t really inspiring you or making you feel all that comfortable, consider changing up the color scheme.

Bright, warm colors, such as yellow, orange, red, etc. can really help to liven up a room, whereas darker colors, such as blues and purples, can induce a sense of calm and relaxation.

Sometimes, though, even just the act of changing up the colors will be enough to disrupt how you feel about your home. There’s nothing quite like walking into a room that’s been freshly painted. But if you go a step further and choose colors that contribute to the effect you’re pursuing, then this change can have an even bigger impact and completely transform your home.

The walls of our home are a wonderful opportunity to change the mood and bring in joy and love. You can start with the paint color, but don’t stop there. Find some things you can hang that really drive positive emotions.

For example, look for some artwork that inspires peace or calm, put up pictures of loved ones, or have some dog portraits made so that you can look into your pets eyes every time you walk into a room.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter what you put up so long as it has the intended effect: creating joy and love.

Looking at this stuff every day can really change the ambience in your home, and then, during more difficult times, you will have something to look at to lift your spirits and bring you back to your happy place.

Use Patterns and Prints

In addition to hanging stuff on your walls that inspires joy, consider experimenting with different patterns and prints. Solid color walls are the most common, and what a realtor would recommend so that your house remains “current.” But this approach isn’t always the most fun.

So, why not put a cool spiral design on a wall in your living room? Or stencil in some vines along the baseboard of your kitchen. Or put up a wallpaper that has dogs on it?

Sure, some of this stuff is “less traditional” and doesn’t have the same mass appeal as other things, but if it makes you feel good and makes your home more joyful and loving, then isn’t that all that matters?
