Anyone who has moved from a small apartment to a larger house has had the experience of thinking about their furniture in a new light. From the cramped-yet-cosy interiors of your average apartment area to the spacious surroundings of a home is a sizeable shift, and one that can take a little time to get used to, especially in the interior design department. Luckily, all is not lost, and there are certain things that can be done to ensure that your new space feels as homely and happy as can be.

First Thing’s First: Are You Living With Other People?

This is the first thing that needs to be considered when working out how to proceed with a new area. After all, when another person’s needs, or several other people’s needs, have to be accounted for in a situation, the way in which you proceed is going to be drastically different than if you’ve set out on this journey alone, both for better and for worse.

If you are moving in with other people, especially if you’re coming from living alone, having to make compromises with the house can be quite challenging, as it can feel like people are encroaching on your space and vice versa. With that said, it can also be a built-in way to really freshen up a space with new perspectives, and a larger area means that you can maintain your own style whilst also incorporating the styles of whoever you’re living with.

Try to take this time as an opportunity to bond with whoever you’re moving in with, and find a compromise that works toward everybody’s tastes. This can also be a time to invest in some joint furniture that is a little more suited to the spacious area than something coming from an apartment. Think of a new TV, a new kitchen setup, or maybe even a new three-seater sofa depending on what your budget is. Remember that you’re building a life with your new housemates and whether they’re a partner, a friend, or someone that has just moved in for a room to sleep in, there are always things that can be done to make that relationship feel more comfortable.

Be Strategic With Plants

Some houses will be designed to have very large rooms that can be difficult to deal with if you’re used to smaller spaces. If so, you might want to consider something that feels a tad counterintuitive: Making the room feel smaller. Although not the most common complaint, it’s understandable to feel like you just can’t make a room feel complete with a lot of empty space, and if this is the case, why not try some potted plants?

Getting strategic with some potted plant placements will provide you with a great way to keep your house feeling fresh and vibrant while filling out some of the space you’re dealing with and adding some natural texture. Placing potted plants near windows and doorways can offer some cohesion to the overall look of a space in a way that feels organic and seamless. Plus, compared to furniture, you can often get some quite beautiful local plants for cheaper than you would an equivalent piece of furniture.

Find Ways to Divide Up Rooms

A lot of interior design tricks involve convincing the brain that an area is different from what it actually is. Whether that be through painting your walls two-tone to add structure and definition, or by adding mirrors to make a room feel larger, it’s a principle that sits at the core of many interior design tips and tricks. So, when I talk about dividing up a room or a space, I mean that more figuratively, making a room feel divided, and in turn, giving it a more structured feeling that can be easier to deal with.

This is something that can easily be achieved with the addition of a daybed. A daybed can be used to create a buffer for certain parts of a space, making a path through which people can move through the room, rather than just being a big open space. Room dividers can be used to do this in a bigger way, if you really want to divide up a room, but we personally find that the more subtle approach tends to lend itself to a more stylish, intentional final design.

Whether you’re new to interior design and decor or you’re simply excited to dig into a new space, there’s a lot that you can do to make a house feel more comfortable. From a three-seater couch to plants, mirrors, daybeds, and beyond, the world is your oyster. Remember that the main thing in any home decor project is ensuring that you’re comfortable, and you have the freedom for that to look however you need it to. Good luck.
